2 Peter 3

1. My dear ones, this is the second letter I am writing to you. In both of these letters I have tried to remind you by stirring up your sincere mind.

2 Peter was written to a different group of people then 1 Peter. See the introduction to these notes for details.

2. This means you should remember the word spoken by the holy prophets and the commandments of our Lord and Savior which were passed on to you through His apostles.

But you, beloved, ought to remember the words that were spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jude 17

3. First of all, you need to know that in the last days there will be mockers. The only thing they want out of life is to get something for themselves.

In the last time there will be mockers, following after their own ungodly lusts. Jude 18

“Proud,” “Haughty,” “Scoffer,” are his names, who acts with angry pride. Proverbs 21:24

4. And they will say where is his promise of His coming? Since our fathers died, everything is just like it was since the beginning of creation.

Here are some examples of people mocking the Lord:

Who say, “Let Him make speed, let Him hasten His work, that we may see it; and let the purpose of the Holy One of Israel draw near and come to pass, that we may know it!” Isaiah 5:19

Indeed they say to me, Where is the word of the LORD? Why does he not do something now?” Jeremiah 17:15

The house of Israel is saying, ‘The vision that he sees is for many days from now, and he prophesies of times far off.' “Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “None of My words will be postponed any more, but the word which I speak will be done,” says the Lord GOD.'?” Ezekiel 12:27-28

5 – 6

They purposely close their eyes to the fact that there were that by the Word of God the heavens were created long ago and the earth was created out of water and by water. It was by water that the world was flooded and destroyed

Those who hate God say that there was no flood. They ignore the fact that there are fish fossils on the tops of mountains.

These same men have started a humanistic religion called Climate Change to explain the flood. Scientists have created fake information to say that there is something called global warming. There lies have been exposed in the conservative news media, but the fake news continues to support these lies.

One of the biggest lies is their belief that the world will become so warm that the polar regions will melt and cause worldwide flooding.

Never again will the water become a flood to destroy all flesh. Genesis 9:15

While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, And cold and heat, And summer and winter, And day and night Shall not cease.” Genesis 8:22

For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah. Matthew 24:37

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness. Romans 1:18

7. The heavens and the earth by His Word are kept ready for the fire on the day of judgment and the destruction of evil men.

Hell was not created for men. Hell was created for the devil and his angels. Those who go to hell, go there of their own choice.

Everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. Matthew 25:41. See also Jude 7.

8. But do not miss the fact dear brothers that to the Lord a day may be thought of as a thousand years, and a thousand years as only a day.

The mockers thought that Jesus had promised to return during their time.

One way of thinking about time is to imagine an army marching through a city. If we are watching from a certain place in the city we will see a certain part of the army, but God can see the army marching all the way from the front to the back. God is not limited by time.

And swore by him that lives for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that are, and the earth, and the things that are in them, and the sea, and the things that are in them, that there should be time no longer. Revelation 10:6

9. The Lord is not slow about His promises as some people seem to think, but He is very patient with you. He does not want any man to be destroyed, but He wants all men to repent.

If God had chosen only certain people to go to heaven, and others to go to Hell no matter what they did, then why does the Bible say that God does not want any man to be destroyed? Why does He bother stretching out His arms and begging all men to be saved, if some of them were chosen to go to hell?

But as for Israel he says, “All day long I have stretched out my hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.” romans 10:21

Men go to hell by their own choice. You might think that nobody in their right mind would choose to go to hell, but there are men who have become so evil that they choose death and hell rather than serving God.

They were saying to the mountains and to the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb. Revelation 6:16

10 – 11

The day of the Lord will come like a thief when you do not expect Him. The heavens will disappear will pass away with a loud sound and the elements will be destroyed by fire and the earth and all of its things will be burned up

For this reason you also must be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will. Matthew 24:44

1
1. When we think about how all these things will be destroyed, we should be men of good and holy character

Hold onto the things of this world lightly so that it will not be so hard to let them go.

12. We should live expecting and working for the coming of the Lord when the heavens will be destroyed by burning in the elements destroyed with fire

Some Bible teachers say that the earth will be destroyed by a nuclear bomb. The Bible says that God will destroy the world - not men.

13. But our hope is in the new heaven and new earth that He promised us, where righteousness has its home.

In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
John 14:2 – 3

14. Beloved, since you are looking for these things. I urge you to make sure that this day will find you at peace with God without spot and blameless in His sight

But when these things begin to take place, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. Luke 21:28

15. And think of God's patience waiting for men to be saved. As our dear brother Paul said in his letter to you, which was written by the wisdom that God gave to him.

Just realize that God's waiting is only allowing more people to be saved and is building His church. So the markers are making fun of God for being so patient.

Whenever you twist the Scriptures to accommodate the level upon which you want to live, and if you decided to live on a low level and you try now to twist the Scriptures to accommodate that level, you are twisting them to your own destruction.

The kindness of God leads you to repentance. Romans 2:4

16. This is how he writes all his letters when he speaks about these things. There are some parts of his letters that are hard to understand which unbalanced people twist as they do the other Scriptures of the same kind, and they bring trouble on their own had heads

The original language here is saying that Paul's writings are of the same type and equal to other Scriptures.

17. But for you, my dear friends, have been warned, and you should be very careful not to be taken away by errors of men with no character who can make you slip and fall.

God's Word warns us -if we read it!

Moreover, by them Your servant is warned; and in keeping them there is great reward. Psalm 19:11

18. Instead, you should grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and to Him be the glory now and until the day of eternity. Amen!

It is possible to have knowledge without grace. Some people say grace is favor that we do not deserve. If you use that definition, Peter would be saying, “You should grow more in favor that you do not deserve.”
Some people say that grace is the power to do what you ought to do. If you use that definition, Peter would be saying, “Allow God to help you grow in the power to do what you should do.”
