John 2

1 – 4

The next day there was a wedding in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and His disciples were also invited. The wine ran out so Jesus’ mother told Him, “They have no more wine.” Jesus said, “Dear woman, My time has not yet come.”

Some churches teach that we should pray to Mary because they say Jesus has to do whatever she says. Jesus had respect for His mother, but it is a lie to say that we have to come to Jesus through Mary.

5. But His mother told the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.”

Mary is showing us that we need to do whatever Jesus tells us. God always confirms with two or three witnesses (most often from His Word) what He wants us to do. Many times when men tell us what to do they cannot give us two or three witnesses.

6 – 8

Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons.

Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled, He said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the head servant.” So the servants did what He said.

Many times God tests us by asking us to do something that seems stupid to us. It is like God is saying. "Do you trust Me enough to do what I say?"

9. When the head servant tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over.

The ones who are serving the Lord know His secrets.

10 – 11

He said, “Every man always serves the best wine first, then when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the cheap wine. But you have kept the best until now!”

This sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed His glory. And His disciples believed in Him.

There are false books that say that Jesus did miracles when he was a young boy. We follow the Bible, the Bible says that this was His first miracle.

12. After the wedding He went to Capernaum for a few days with His mother, His brothers, and His disciples.

After this, Jesus used Capernaum as His home base.

13 – 14

It was time for the Jewish Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem. In the temple area He saw merchants selling cattle, sheep, and doves for sacrifices; He also saw dealers at tables changing money.

The priests would only accept certain coins in the temple. This made a good business for moneychangers.

15 – 16

Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple. He drove out the sheep and cattle, scattered the money changers’ coins over the floor, and turned over their tables. Then, going over to the people who sold doves, He told them, “Get these things out of here. Stop turning My Father’s house into a market!”

Today the Lord can see many things that do not belong in the church. He is still saying to us, "Take these things out of my Father's house!" Jesus was saying that God was His Father so He is the Son of God.

17. Then His disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: “Passion for God’s house has filled Me.”

Passion for Your house has filled Me. Psalm 69:9

Then the Lord you are seeking will suddenly come to His Temple. Malachi 3:1

18 – 21

But the Jewish leaders said, “What are you doing? If God gave you authority to do this, show us a sign to prove it.”

Jesus said. “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” They said. “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and You can rebuild it in three days?” But when Jesus said “this temple,” He meant His own body.

Later, when Jesus was arrested, the Pharisees found some men who were willing to twist what He said.

We heard him say, “I will destroy this Temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another, made without human hands." Mark 14:58

22. After He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered He had said this, and they understood the Scriptures [about Him] and what Jesus had said.

John is saying that after Jesus was raised from the dead, the disciples began to understand passages like Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53.

23 – 25

Because of the miraculous signs Jesus did in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration, many began to trust in Him.

But Jesus did not trust them, because He knew human nature. No one needed to tell Him what mankind is really like.

Jesus knew that there will always be people who are only interested in miracles. He knew that the weeds and the thorns will choke people who have not taken the time to put down deep roots.

Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the signs. After this, many of His disciples turned away and left Him. John 6:26,66
